Living an inspired life. . .

The Journey begins today...

My dream is to use simple strategies combined with efficient technology and the power of social media to bring about step changes in our society.

I have been developing software since I was 16 years old, in those days using a Commodore 64! It is a never ending process of new platforms and new languages and new things to learn. iPhone Application Development, Cape Town South Africa

I must have written applications in just about every available language ranging from machine language, assembler, Fortran, Delphi, C, C++ and recently a lot of ASP.Net C# work.

However, for the life of me I can't remember when last I have enjoyed coding as much as I presently am. I joined the Apple iPhone Developer network more than a year ago and really enjoy creating simple, elegant applications using a very complex piece of equipement.

The iPhone is now in it's 4th generation and the Objective-C language is not easy to code in, but the hardware offers such a diverse and powerful platform where once again a single developer can create great rich applications.

The phone itself has become an indespensible part of our lives and more companies are seeing the value of writting smaller more focused applications with focused use, rather than bloated "all things to all people" software.

Microsoft C# and .NET Development

At heart I have always been a C/C++ programmer, having cut my teeth in my final year at varsity on Turbo C which at that stage was seen as one of the best platforms to develop on in the DOS, pre Windows era.  Later I migrated to Borlands C++ Builder which I really enjoyed as one could rapidly develop windows based applications using it.

Apple iPhone icon developmentWhen Microsoft released the first version of the .Net framework and then 1.1 of the framework I started coding in C#.  For me it was an easy migration as syntactically it was still very similar to C++ and there was a striking similarity between Borland C++ builder code and the C# ASP.NET code we saw at the time.

Coupled with the power of Microsoft SQL Server and the web based technologies I was used to, I developed many large applications that were used for high volume transaction processing implementations.

Along with Visual studio and all the other design tools I could create both powerful and good looking applications in relatively short time periods.

Photoshop, CSS and HTML coding

Apple iPhone icon developmentWhen I started my own consultancy in the '90's, called Videx Graphics, it was primarily aimed at web development.  I focused mostly on client web sites and used a lot of ASP and HTML.  However, over time I realized that I had been relying heavily on others to do the creative work.  Coupled with my love for photography I started using Adobe Photoshop and have slowly upped my skills in terms of creative graphic photoshop design.

All the recent projects that I have worked on I have done all the creative and graphic design and development along with the HTML coding and CSS work.  This includes all the creative content inside of the iPhone applications which you will see elsewhere on this site.

Apple iPhone icon developmentThe real benefit of doing all the creative work and coding is that it is easier to tie all the elements together and deliver a more intergrated product faster since there is no waiting period for elements from designers and graphic artists.

I make extensive use of CSS and if I can get away with using this rather than images to create fast loading yet elegant sites, I would prefer CSS over graphics.
